Lately, I have been faced with a few really big life decisions, mainly regarding my job and which direction I want to take my career. Have you ever had a knot in your stomach for an entire week? I have, but thank the universe for DIY! That’s how I found clarity and ended up with a cute new DIY modern woven perforated leather bag.
A few months ago I was at ALT Summit and I was using this $5 bag from Target in a photoshoot with a few of my blogger pals. Faith from Design Fixation and Holly from Club Crafted both insisted that this bag needed to be a woven DIY project and of course I agreed!
However, when I got home from the conference there was so much to sort through, the idea to turn the bag into a project had slipped my mind. Then the other night I came home from work tired and frustrated, saw the bag in my closet, and decided I would grab some yarn and see what happened.
After picking out a few complementary colors, I sat down with a few rolls of yarn and a needle you would use for sewing leather (the only one I had large enough for this project). I had no plan, I just figured I would weave in a few modern shapes and try to get my mind off of my problems. But this time, instead of quieting my mind, I was still thinking, I just felt calmer. The more I wove, the more my thoughts intertwined with designing the bag and what I should do with my job.
Soon, I was feeling relaxed and it became clear to me that I truly love sharing my creativity, and inspiring others to make.
Soon, I was feeling relaxed and it became clear to me that I truly love sharing my creativity, and inspiring others to make. I started to rethink how I structure my days. How could I intentionally dedicate time to growing my business and create a balanced life? I realized that though intention is such a big part of my spiritual practice, I had slacked off on creating my days with intention. I realized that I had been winging it, which left me feeling overworked and out of alignment. Then I remembered a friend mentioned the self-care wheel, and how we should try to balance our lives based on the different areas. Maybe I was on to something!
By the time I was done with my bag, I had a fresh perspective. Instead of stuffing my feelings I was able to work through them and create something beautiful in the process. I downloaded the wheel and decided to start a Sunday night practice of planning my week.
Though I hadn’t exactly solved my problem, I did come up with a plan. I was able to get much more clear on the next right step when I was crafting. Let’s get to making!
Supplies for DIY modern woven perforated leather bag:
4 colors of yarn
One large needle you can thread yarn through
A perforated faux leather bag (I got mine at Target)
Pencil and paper
On a piece of paper, practice sketching the shapes you would like to weave into the bag. Then pick a yarn color and thread the needle. Weaving through the inside of the bag out, start forming your first shape.
I skipped over about 5 holes at a time and doubled over the yarn so that it appeared thicker. To fill in the shapes, just weave the yarn across the shape and do not skip any holes. Tie off any yarn inside the bag.
