I loved growing up out here in the west. Most days as kids we would spend time hiking around in the desert looking for cool rocks or the occasional lizard spotting. It didn’t bother us that there wasn’t a lot of vegetation aside from cactus plants. We just knew it was best to stay away from them or risk spending the evening with mom and a pair of tweezers. Ahh, such fond memories…
These days the cactus theme has been making an appearance on everything from home décor to fashion. I have to admit I’m pretty inspired by the trend myself and have been dreaming up all sorts of cactus-inspired crafts to share here at BlissMakes. The first of which being these adorable DIY Cactus Clay Earrings. I’m so excited to share with you how easy they are to make!
- Polymer Clay
- Jewelry pliers
- Earring eye pin
- Hook ear wires
- Oven for baking
- Super glue
Step one: Roll clay into two balls (a little smaller than a dime) for the cactus base. Then roll four smaller balls for the arms and two even smaller ones for the flower.
Step two: Roll out the clay balls into snakes. Be sure not to roll them too thin, you want them to be able to support the flower.
Step Three: Bend the four arms into small C shapes.
Step Four: Carefully push the eye pin through the center of the cactus base. There will be a portion of the pin that sticks out at the bottom. I waited till after the clay was baked before I cut it off.
Step Five: Attach the arms of the cactus to the base. Slightly smooth the clay from the arms to the base to ensure they stick.
Step Six: Put your clay cacti and the two flower balls into a baking pan and place in the oven. Bake at 250 degrees for 15 minutes. Take earrings out of the oven and let cool.
Step Seven: After your cacti cool, remove them from the pan. Then using your jewelry pliers, open the eye pin on the earring hook and attach it to the eye pin in the cactus.
Step Eight: Using your jewelry cutters, snip the remaining portion of the eye pin in your cactus.
Step Nine: Place a dab of super glue on the arm you would like to place your flower. Quickly attach the flower ball before it dries. Use your nail or a toothpick to scrape off any excess glue.
I love how adorable these turned out, and the fact that they were so simple to make doesn’t hurt. I see these paired with a summer dress in my immediate future!
